    Evaluation of School Children Nutritional Status in Ecuador Using Nutrimetry: A Proposal of an Education Protocol to Address the Determinants of Malnutrition

    The education sector is a cornerstone in the battle against malnutrition in children. However, there are still no consolidated protocols that outline strategies for how nutrition programs in low- and middle-income countries can be delivered through the education sector. Establishing the correct community diagnosis is essential prior to the elaboration of an intervention plan for a school population that takes into account more than just traditional variables related to the nutritional status. A total of 574 boys and girls aged 3-11 years from three educational institutions in different municipalities in Ecuador participated in the study. Sociodemographic, anthropometric (weight and height) and coproparasitological data were obtained. Nutrimetry, which is a combination of two classical anthropometrics indicators, was used for the analysis of the nutritional status, and the indicators' frequencies varied among the schools. In order to improve the nutritional status of children, we proposed a framework mainly focusing on establishing alliances with the education sector and taking into account gender equality; respect for the environment; and the customs, beliefs and traditions of each population. The results obtained from the analyses of other variables demonstrated the importance of an adequate diagnosis prior to any type of intervention at the nutritional level, since characteristics could vary by local area and have an impact on the successfulness of the intervention

    Circadian Rhythm Alteration and Metabolic Syndrome

    There is growing scientific evidence that connects circadian rhythm abnormalities with cardiovascular risk factors. Due to their work schedules, shift workers are exposed to changes in their circadian rhythm that are associated with metabolic syndrome (MS). Aim: To determine the relationship between shift work and metabolic syndrome. Methodology: This is a cross-sectional observational study. The sample included 300 adult volunteers, health workers of a public hospital in the city of Riobamba, Ecuador. The diagnosis of MS was made based on the criteria bythe Adult Treatment Panel III (ATP III). In addition, sleep quality was assessed through the Pittsburg sleep quality index. Cluster analysis of K-means was used to identify representative groups. In addition, chi-squared test and ANOVA were used to determine the association between variables. Results: Three conglomerates based on age and sex were established, which were numbered consecutively 1, 2 and 3. Conglomerate 1 had a statistically higher percentage of people who worked in shifts, suffered MS and had worse sleep quality than the other two conglomerates. In conclusión, shift work is related to the risk of suffering from MS and poor quality of sleep. Keywords: shift work, metabolic syndrome, sleep quality, k medias clusters. Resumen Introducción: La evidencia creciente conecta las alteraciones del ritmo circadiano con factores de riesgo cardiovascular. Los trabajadores por turnos debido a sus horarios de trabajo están expuestos a alteraciones de su ritmo circadiano que se asocian a síndrome metabólico (SM). Objetivo: Determinar la relación entre trabajo por turnos y síndrome metabólico. Metodología: Estudio observacional transversal. La muestra incluyó 300 voluntarios adultos, empleados sanitarios de un hospital público de la ciudad de Riobamba, Ecuador. El diagnóstico de SM se realizó con base en los criterios del Adult Treatment Panel III (ATP III). Además, se evaluó la calidad del sueño a través del índice de la calidad de sueño de Pittsburg. Se utilizó el análisis de clúster de K medias para identificar grupos representativos, además Chi2 y ANOVA para determinar asociación entre las variables. Resultados: Se establecieron tres clusters basados en edad y sexo, los que fueron numerados de forma consecutiva 1, 2 y 3. El cluster 1 tuvo un porcentaje estadísticamente más alto de personas que trabajaban por turnos, sufrían SM y que presentaron peor calidad de sueño que los otros dos clusters. Conclusiones: El trabajo por turnos se relaciona con el riesgo de sufrir SM y mala calidad de sueño. Palabras clave: trabajo por turnos, síndrome metabólico, calidad del sueño, análisis de k medias

    The Guppy Effect as Interference

    People use conjunctions and disjunctions of concepts in ways that violate the rules of classical logic, such as the law of compositionality. Specifically, they overextend conjunctions of concepts, a phenomenon referred to as the Guppy Effect. We build on previous efforts to develop a quantum model that explains the Guppy Effect in terms of interference. Using a well-studied data set with 16 exemplars that exhibit the Guppy Effect, we developed a 17-dimensional complex Hilbert space H that models the data and demonstrates the relationship between overextension and interference. We view the interference effect as, not a logical fallacy on the conjunction, but a signal that out of the two constituent concepts, a new concept has emerged.Comment: 10 page

    Entanglement of Conceptual Entities in Quantum Model Theory (QMod)

    We have recently elaborated 'Quantum Model Theory' (QMod) to model situations where the quantum effects of contextuality, interference, superposition, entanglement and emergence, appear without the entities giving rise to these situations having necessarily to be of microscopic nature. We have shown that QMod models without introducing linearity for the set of the states. In this paper we prove that QMod, although not using linearity for the state space, provides a method of identification for entangled states and an intuitive explanation for their occurrence. We illustrate this method for entanglement identification with concrete examples

    Investigating non-classical correlations between decision fused multi-modal documents

    Correlation has been widely used to facilitate various information retrieval methods such as query expansion, relevance feedback, document clustering, and multi-modal fusion. Especially, correlation and independence are important issues when fusing different modalities that influence a multi-modal information retrieval process. The basic idea of correlation is that an observable can help predict or enhance another observable. In quantum mechanics, quantum correlation, called entanglement, is a sort of correlation between the observables measured in atomic-size particles when these particles are not necessarily collected in ensembles. In this paper, we examine a multimodal fusion scenario that might be similar to that encountered in physics by firstly measuring two observables (i.e., text-based relevance and image-based relevance) of a multi-modal document without counting on an ensemble of multi-modal documents already labeled in terms of these two variables. Then, we investigate the existence of non-classical correlations between pairs of multi-modal documents. Despite there are some basic differences between entanglement and classical correlation encountered in the macroscopic world, we investigate the existence of this kind of non-classical correlation through the Bell inequality violation. Here, we experimentally test several novel association methods in a small-scale experiment. However, in the current experiment we did not find any violation of the Bell inequality. Finally, we present a series of interesting discussions, which may provide theoretical and empirical insights and inspirations for future development of this direction

    Structured inquiry-based learning: Drosophila GAL4 enhancer trap characterization in an undergraduate laboratory course.

    We have developed and tested two linked but separable structured inquiry exercises using a set of Drosophila melanogaster GAL4 enhancer trap strains for an upper-level undergraduate laboratory methods course at Bucknell University. In the first, students learn to perform inverse PCR to identify the genomic location of the GAL4 insertion, using FlyBase to identify flanking sequences and the primary literature to synthesize current knowledge regarding the nearest gene. In the second, we cross each GAL4 strain to a UAS-CD8-GFP reporter strain, and students perform whole mount CNS dissection, immunohistochemistry, confocal imaging, and analysis of developmental expression patterns. We have found these exercises to be very effective in teaching the uses and limitations of PCR and antibody-based techniques as well as critical reading of the primary literature and scientific writing. Students appreciate the opportunity to apply what they learn by generating novel data of use to the wider research community

    A study of the dry forest communities in the Dominican Republic

    This paper is a floristic and phytosociological study of the dry forest communities of the Dominican Republic. A total of 69 relevés in dry forest biotopes were carried out. The samples were subsequently subjected to Detrended Correspondence Analysis for the determination and study of possible groupings. The study does not cover tree formations growing on serpentines, nor the so-called semideciduous forests, peculiar to areas with higher rainfall. A total of nine phytocoenoses were identified. The most significant results led to the description of six new phytosociological associations: Simaroubetum berteroani (thorny dry forest on coastal dunes), Phyllostylo rhamnoidis-Prosopidetum juliflorae (southern Dominican disturbed dry forest), Consoleo moniliformis-Camerarietum linearifoliae (dry forest on hard limestones), Lemaireocereo hystricis-Prosopidetum juliflorae (northern Dominican disturbed dry forest), Lycio americani-Prosopidetum juliflorae (disturbed dry forest on saline soils) and Guettardo ellipticae-Guapiretum discoloris (dry forest on flat-topped hillocks in Montecristi). This is an important step forward in the phytosociological and floristic studies of the Caribbean territories.Este trabalho apresenta um estudo florístico e fitossociológico das comunidades de florestas secas da República Dominicana. Um total de 69 amostras foram obtidas pelo método relevé em biótopos florestais secos. As amostras foram posteriormente submetidas à análise de correspondência destendenciada para a determinação e estudo de possíveis agrupamentos. O estudo não abrange formações arbóreas desenvolvidas sobre serpentinitos, nem as chamadas florestas semideciduais, peculiares às áreas de maior pluviosidade. Foram identificados nove fitocenoses. Os resultados mais significativos levaram à descrição de seis novas associações fitossociológicas: Simaroubetum berteroani (floresta espinhosa seca em dunas costeiras), Phyllostylo rhamnoidis-Prosopidetum juliflorae (floresta seca perturbada do sul da República Dominicana), Consoleo moniliformis-Camerarietum linearifoliae (floresta seca sobre calcários compactos), Lemaireocereo hystricis-Prosopidetum juliflorae (floresta seca perturbada do norte da República Dominicana), Lycio americani-Prosopidetum juliflorae (floresta seca perturbada desenvolvida em solos salinos) Guettardo ellipticae-Guapiretum discoloris (floresta seca em colinas de topo achatado em Montecristi).     Las fresas son frutos con una vida de anaquel corta debido a su elevada pérdida de humedad y a la sensibilidad al ataque de microorganismos. El objetivo del presente trabajo fue evaluar el efecto de los recubrimientos de quitosano adicionados con el extracto acuoso de hoja de Moringa oleifera en las propiedades fisicoquímicas. El extracto acuoso de hoja de Moringa se obtuvo mediante el método de extracción por ultrasonificación y microondas asistida. Se ensayaron dos formulaciones como recubrimientos y un control. Los parámetros evaluados fueron; pérdida de peso, pH, acidez titulable, sólidos solubles totales, índice de sabor y color (Hue, L* y croma). El método de extracción por ultrasonido y microondas es eficaz para evitar el uso de solventes y reducir el tiempo de extracción. Los recubrimientos aplicados mejoraron el índice de sabor y disminuyeron los valores de acidez titulable (AT) mejorando así, la dulzura de la fresa

    Which Factors Determine Spatial Segregation in the South American Opossums (Didelphis aurita and D. albiventris)? An Ecological Niche Modelling and Geometric Morphometrics Approach

    Didelphis albiventris and D. aurita are Neotropical marsupials that share a unique evolutionary history and both are largely distributed throughout South America, being primarily allopatric throughout their ranges. In the Araucaria moist forest of Southern Brazil these species are sympatric and they might potentially compete having similar ecology. For this reason, they are ideal biological models to address questions about ecological character displacement and how closely related species might share their geographic space. Little is known about how two morphologically similar species of marsupials may affect each other through competition, if by competitive exclusion and competitive release. We combined ecological niche modeling and geometric morphometrics to explore the possible effects of competition on their distributional ranges and skull morphology. Ecological niche modeling was used to predict their potential distribution and this method enabled us to identify a case of biotic exclusion where the habit generalist D. albiventris is excluded by the presence of the specialist D. aurita. The morphometric analyses show that a degree of shape discrimination occurs between the species, strengthened by allometric differences, which possibly allowed them to occupy marginally different feeding niches supplemented by behavioral shift in contact areas. Overlap in skull morphology is shown between sympatric and allopatric specimens and a significant, but weak, shift in shape occurs only in D. aurita in sympatric areas. This could be a residual evidence of a higher past competition between both species, when contact zones were possibly larger than today. Therefore, the specialist D. aurita acts a biotic barrier to D. albiventris when niche diversity is not available for coexistence. On the other hand, when there is niche diversification (e.g. habitat mosaic), both species are capable to coexist with a minimal competitive effect on the morphology of D. aurita
